It's one of the most common questions we get on a commercial walkthrough: "I already have security cameras. Do I really still need a burglar alarm?"
It's a fair question, and the honest answer is that the two systems aren't alternatives. A commercial burglar alarm and a security camera system answer different questions. The alarm answers "is someone in my building right now, and who is being notified?" The cameras answer "what exactly happened, and who was it?" Businesses that treat those as competing purchases usually end up with a gap in one of them. Businesses that design them as layers get detection, visibility, verification, and response from one system.

What a Commercial Burglar Alarm Actually Detects
A commercial burglar alarm system — often called intrusion detection — is a network of sensors reporting physical conditions to a control panel. It doesn't interpret pictures. It reports facts: this door opened, this glass broke, something is moving in this room, someone pressed this button.
The devices we install most often on commercial properties:
- Door contacts — on every perimeter opening, including man doors, overhead and dock doors, roof hatches, and gates. A contact reports the door opened whether or not a camera is aimed at it.
- Window contacts — ground-level and accessible openings that are unlikely to be well covered by video.
- Interior motion detectors — placed in corridors, lobbies, and open floor space an intruder has to cross. Commercial-grade PIR and dual-technology detectors reduce nuisance trips from HVAC air movement and rodents.
- Glass-break detection — acoustic sensors tuned to the frequency of breaking glass, used on storefronts and ground-floor windows where entry is more likely through glass than a door.
- Panic and duress devices — fixed buttons under counters and at reception, plus hold-up devices for cash handling. These generate an immediate priority signal without anyone having to make a call.
- Environmental and supervisory sensors — low temperature, water, and cooler or freezer monitoring. Over a Minnesota holiday weekend, a burst pipe or a failed walk-in can cost more than a burglary.
- Cellular and battery backup communication — so a cut phone line, a failed internet circuit, or a power outage doesn't silence the system.
All of that reports to a monitoring center. When a zone trips, an operator follows a defined sequence: verify, notify your call list, and dispatch police, with the alarm zone identified so responders know which part of the building is involved.
What Security Cameras Do Better Than Alarms
Cameras do things sensors fundamentally cannot. A commercial security camera system gives you:
- Identification. A contact tells you a door opened. Only video tells you who opened it, what they were carrying, and which vehicle they left in.
- Context and evidence. Recorded video is what insurers, attorneys, and prosecutors actually use. A sensor log is a timestamp; footage is a case.
- Coverage of areas an alarm can't protect. Parking lots, yards, docks, dumpsters, trailer rows, and the exterior of the building have no doors to contact and no glass to break, but that's where a lot of commercial loss happens.
- Operational visibility during business hours. An alarm is disarmed all day. Cameras still cover slip-and-fall claims, shrink, dock activity, delivery disputes, and safety incidents.
- Verification of alarm events. When a zone trips, video is what determines whether it's a real intrusion or a cleaning crew who forgot the code.
- Proactive intervention, when monitored. With 24/7 live video monitoring, analytics and operators can act while someone is still in the parking lot — before any door is touched and before an alarm zone would ever trip.
What Burglar Alarms Do Better Than Cameras
The alarm's advantages are less obvious but just as real:
- It detects, it doesn't just record. A sensor event immediately becomes an alarm signal with a defined response procedure attached. No one has to be watching.
- It covers physical conditions and blind spots. Interior rooms, back hallways, storage closets, mechanical rooms, and the inside of a dark warehouse with three cameras aimed at the docks.
- It works when the camera doesn't. A blocked, blinded, spray-painted, cut, or offline camera doesn't stop a door contact from reporting.
- It escalates on its own. Central station monitoring means police get called whether you're asleep, in a meeting, or in another state.
- It provides a duress path. Panic and hold-up devices have no video equivalent.
- It gives you an arm/disarm record. Who armed the building, who disarmed it, and at what time — a surprisingly useful management tool.
Why Cameras Alone Often Document a Break-In Instead of Stopping One
This is the part worth being blunt about. A camera system with no analytics, no monitoring service, and no alarm integration is doing exactly one job: recording. It is not generating an alarm, and nobody is being dispatched.
What that looks like in practice — and we've reviewed this scenario more times than we'd like:
- Someone forces a rear service door at 2:40 AM.
- The cameras record it perfectly.
- No signal leaves the building. No phone rings. No dispatch happens.
- The intrusion is discovered at 7:15 AM by the first employee in.
- Police take a report on a crime that ended five hours earlier.
- Footage may or may not be usable — depending on lens choice, distance, glare, whether the camera was still online, and whether retention had already rolled over.
Cameras earn their value in that scenario only after the loss. A monitored alarm would have put an operator and police into the event while the subject was still inside. Live video monitoring would have interrupted it in the lot. Neither replaces the recording — they act on it.

How Modern Alarm Systems Integrate With Cameras and Access Control
Integration is where the actual value shows up, and it's the part most older systems were never set up to do. On a properly designed commercial system:
- An alarm zone trip calls up the associated cameras. The event arrives with video attached instead of a zone number nobody can interpret.
- Video verifies before dispatch. An operator can confirm a real intrusion, which reduces false-alarm dispatches, municipal false-alarm fees, and the "cry wolf" effect that slows response over time.
- Access control and the alarm share schedules. Doors lock and the system arms on the same closing schedule, so security doesn't depend on the last person out remembering both.
- A valid credential can disarm the area. Employees badge in and the partition disarms — fewer codes shared, fewer false trips, and a cleaner audit trail. A forced or held-open door still alarms regardless.
- Mobile notifications are unified. Arm/disarm, alarm, forced-door, and trouble conditions push to the right people, with a documented escalation list.
- Trouble and health reporting. Low battery, communication failure, an offline camera, or a full drive gets flagged when it happens — not the morning you need footage.

False Alarms: The Real Cost of an Unverified System
False alarms are the quiet reason a lot of commercial systems get ignored or turned off. Common causes we find on service calls: shared or stale user codes, motion detectors aimed into HVAC airflow or at loading-dock sunlight, contacts on doors that no longer seat properly, cleaning crews with no instruction, and 15-year-old detectors well past their service life.
What actually reduces them:
- Video verification on alarm events, so a human confirms before police are dispatched
- Unique user codes and credential-based disarm instead of one code everyone knows
- Correct detector selection and placement — dual-technology where airflow, heat, or forklifts are a factor
- Entry/exit delays and partitions matched to how the building is actually used
- Scheduled testing and preventive service instead of waiting for a failure
What Different Facility Types Actually Need
The right mix is driven by the building, not by a product list.
- Retail: glass-break on storefronts, back-door and dumpster-area coverage, hold-up devices at the register, and cash-handling camera views. Daytime shrink is a camera problem; after-hours entry is an alarm problem.
- Offices and professional buildings: perimeter contacts, interior motion in corridors, credentialed entry with disarm, and coverage of entries, server rooms, and common areas.

When to Upgrade an Older Commercial Alarm Instead of Repairing It Again
Roughly speaking, if you're paying for repeated service on a panel that can't integrate, can't notify you on your phone, and communicates over a line that's being retired, you're funding a replacement in installments.
Good System Design Isn't "More Devices"
The best commercial security design comes from the building, not from a catalog. When we scope a system, we're looking at:
- The building envelope — every door, overhead, window, hatch, and gate, and which ones are realistically accessible after dark
- Operating hours and occupancy — when the building is empty, who has legitimate after-hours access, and whether areas need separate partitions
- Entrances and travel paths — where someone would actually enter and where they'd have to walk once inside
- What's worth protecting — inventory, tooling, equipment, records, cash, controlled substances, IT and network rooms
- Real risk history — prior incidents at your site and in the surrounding area, including loitering and vandalism patterns
- Existing infrastructure — usable cabling, PoE capacity, panel condition, and whether low voltage wiring and network infrastructure can support what you're adding
Twelve well-placed devices designed around how a building is entered will outperform thirty devices scattered by habit. Coverage is a design outcome, not a quantity.
How We'd Evaluate Your Building
We start with an on-site walk, ideally after dark, because a property looks nothing at 10 PM like it does at 10 AM. We check what your cameras actually cover versus what you think they cover, which alarm zones are live and which have been bypassed, whether every perimeter door latches and reports, how the system communicates, and where the network and power single points of failure are.
Then we scope it in phases you can budget. Most buildings don't need everything at once — they need the highest-risk gap closed first, on infrastructure that supports the next layer when you're ready.
